Description
The coal tax post, located on the east side of Coulsdon Road at the junction with The Grove, dates from around 1861. It is a metal structure approximately 4½ feet high, featuring a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. On the front, there is a cast City of London shield, and the pier is inscribed with the lettering "24 & 25 VICT/CAP 42". This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
