Description
Taunton Farmhouse is a building dating from the 15th century and later. It is two storeys high and constructed of flint and red brick, featuring some tile-hanging and weatherboarding. The layout is irregular, with a long wing on the right that has a half-hipped old tile roof, two casement windows, and a doorway with a small wooden gabled porch at the extreme right. There is a modern two-storey bay projection on the right-hand return front. In the centre, there is a projecting gabled wing with a tall stack on the outside wall. The first floor of this wing is tile-hung and includes one modern projecting bay window with leaded casements, along with two small windows on the ground floor.
The interior is notable for its early features, indicating that it is largely an intact hall house with significant alterations from the 17th century. The 15th-century timbering is essentially complete, showcasing elaborately moulded beams and wall-plates, a roof truss, and a crown-post. There is also an inserted first floor and a large brick chimney with an early 17th-century oven. Additionally, extensive timber-framing is present in the wing at the left end.
