Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist is a Grade I listed building located on Church Path in Coulsdon. It is primarily from the late 13th century, with significant later additions. The church is constructed from flint and rubble, featuring extensive brick patching. It has a two-bay nave, with the north aisle widened in the 19th century. The chancel, dating from around 1250, includes stepped sedilia and a piscina. The west tower, built circa 1400, is supported by corner buttresses and topped with a tapering broach spire. Inside, there is a wall tablet dedicated to Grace Gowed, who died in 1631. A new nave, built at right angles to the old and replacing the south aisle, was completed in 1958 in a decorated style by J B S Comper.
