Description
This coal tax post, located opposite "5 Furlongs" on Copsem Lane in Oxshott, dates from around 1861. It is made of metal and stands approximately 4½ feet high. The post features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above, which has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front of the capital band displays the City of London Shield. The lettering on the pier reads "CAP VIC". This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax originating from the 1660s.
