Description

This is a coal tax post located in Oxshott, dating from around 1861. It is made of metal and stands approximately 4½ feet high. The post features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above, which has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front of the capital band displays a cast City of London shield. The pier is inscribed with the lettering "CAP VIC 42". This post served as a marker indicating the boundary where duty was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
