Description
This is a post located opposite Birchwood on Birchwood Lane in Esher, dating from around 1861. It features a metal four-legged plinth with a stop-chamfered pier above. The post has a moulded capital band topped with a pyramidal shape. On the front, there is a cast City of London Shield and lettering on the pier below. This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary at which duty was payable, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
