Description

This is a post located at the north side of Hurst Road in West Molesey, dating from around 1860. It stands approximately 3½ feet high and is made of metal. The post features a four-legged plinth with a stop-chamfered pier above, which is topped with a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front of the capital band displays the City of London Shield, and there is lettering on the pier below. This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
