Description

This is a post dating from around 1860, located on the south bank of the River Thames in the Borough of Elmbridge. It stands approximately 3.5 feet high and is made of granite. The post features a four-legged plinth that measures 18 inches square, topped with a pyramidal shape. An inscription on the pier reads "14 & 15 /VIC. C. 146". This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary at which duty was payable, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
