Description

This post, located at the National Grid Reference TQ 12536750 in West Molesey, dates from around 1860 and stands approximately 4½ feet high. It is made of metal and features a four-legged plinth with a stop-chamfered pier that has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front of the capital band displays a cast shield of the City of London, along with lettering on the pier below. This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
