Description
West Molesey War Memorial is located in a memorial garden on the north side of Walton Road. The garden is separated from the street by iron railings and enclosed with a wooden panel fence, featuring shrubberies and two garden seats. The memorial itself is a 5.5-meter tall rectangular pillar made of Portland stone, topped with a segmental pediment and a low rectangular block. It stands on a two-stage base that rises from a low step and is surrounded by a square pavement, accessible via a path from the street.
On the front face of the memorial, a raised panel features a carved wreath with ribbons at the top, encircling the dedication "PRO PATRIA." Below the wreath, the inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF WEST MOLESEY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR (NAMES) GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS 1914 + 1918."
The rear of the pillar has a raised panel with the general inscription "THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 TO OUR GLORIOUS DEAD." The name of a serviceman who died in the Second World War is carved on the front face of the upper stage of the base, with a small bronze plaque below it that reads "ALSO THOSE WHO DIED 1939-45." Each side of the pillar is decorated with a swag of cloth and leaves, carved in relief.
