Description

The Shepshed War Memorial is made of Portland stone and features a square pillar with a moulded plinth. At each corner, there are square piers that project obliquely, and the memorial stands on a three-stepped base. It has a plain frieze and a projecting cornice adorned with egg and dart decoration. At the top, there is a smaller square pillar with a plain cornice that supports a circular finial topped with a bronze flame.

Surrounding the main pillar are fourteen rectangular marble tablets that were originally intended for names but remain unused. The four sides of the smaller square pillar are engraved with the words: "TO THE MEN WHO CAME/ FROM SHEPSHED/ OAKS-IN-CHARNWOOD/ AND CHARLEY/ 1914-1918/ FOR GOD/ KING AND/ COUNTRY." Each corner pier features carved wreaths that incorporate three small panels arranged vertically, with the panels engraved with the following names of battles: "DARDANELLES/ YPRES/ FALKLANDS; HOOGE/ LOOS/ JUTLAND; VERDUN/ VIMY RIDGE/ CAMBRIA; AISNE/ MONS/ MARNE."

On the main face of the pillar, a large bronze plaque is inscribed with "THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES/ 1914-1918," followed by the names of the fallen. Below this, it states "THESE ALSO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ 1939-1945," along with their names. Additionally, a more recent black marble tablet on the plinth commemorates the names of the sponsors.
