Description

The Church of St Winifride is a disused Roman Catholic church built in 1842 by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin for Ambrose Lisle Phillipps, who contributed some of the labor and materials from the Garendon Estate. The church is constructed of granite rubble and features a Swithland slate roof, designed under Pugin's direction. Its exterior is very simple, consisting of a nave and two aisles under a single roof, with small lancet windows and a tripartite lancet window in the east gable end. There is a small gabled south (ritual) porch with a side entrance and an integral buttress. A later addition includes a north (ritual) vestry and a brick bell cote over the west (ritual) gable.

Inside, the church has a simple but damaged interior, featuring arcades with double chamfered brick arches supported by octagonal sandstone piers. There are remnants of inscriptions and murals created by Anselm Baher, a heraldic artist and Cistercian monk at Mount St Bernards Abbey in Leicestershire. The inscriptions include phrases such as "Whosoever shall pray from this place hear then, O Lord, from heaven and shew mercy" on the south nave wall, and "I have loved the beauty of thy house, O Lord, and the place where thy glory dwelled" on the north nave wall. The chancel walls feature additional inscriptions, and the end has angels on either side of the window with a dove descending above, along with the phrase "Sanctus Sanctus Sanctus W. Dominus Deus Sabaoth."
