Description

The Civil Service Rifles War Memorial is a significant structure made of Portland stone, featuring painted stone flags. The memorial consists of a square column approximately 4.9 meters tall, topped with a shallow cornice that supports a plinth and urn. The plinth is adorned with laurel leaf swags and panels that display the inscriptions MCM XIV and MCM XIX. The column is set on a square, undercut plinth, which itself is elevated on a platform with two steps. On either side of the memorial, painted stone flags are raised; the flag on the west side is the Union Flag, while the flag on the east side represents the regimental colours.

The column features incised inscriptions on its faces. On the south face, it reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE 1240 MEMBERS WHO FELL WHILE SERVING WITH THE REGIMENT IN THE GREAT WAR. THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED ON A SCROLL PLACED WITHIN THIS COLUMN. ALSO IN MEMORY OF MEMBERS OF THE CIVIL SERVICE CADET BATTALION." The north face states: "THIS COLUMN WAS ERECTED BY THE 15TH COUNTY OF LONDON BATTALION THE LONDON REGIMENT PRINCE OF WALES OWN CIVIL SERVICE RIFLES."

Battle honours are inscribed along the upper edge of the undercut plinth. The south face lists: "FESTUBERT 1915 LOOS SOMME 1916 1918 FLERS COURCELETTE." The west face includes: "DOIRAN 1917 LYS KEMMEL GAZA NEBI SAMWIL JERUSALEM." The north face has: "ST QUENTIN ALBERT 1918 ANCRE 1918 BAUPAUME 1918 SELLE." Lastly, the east face features: "TRANSLOY MESSINES 1917 1918 YPRES 1917 1918 CAMBRAI 1917."

This memorial is located on the riverside terrace of Somerset House, providing a view of the Victoria Embankment.
