Description

The 21 bench seats set on the embankment pavement were designed by Lewis and G F Vulliamy and date from 1872 to 1874. These public seats are made of cast iron and feature timber slats. Each bench is a long structure with curved backs, supported by cast iron brackets. The terminal arm-brackets are designed as winged sphinxes, except for the bench located opposite the junction with Horseguards Avenue, which features seated camels instead. These benches are recognized as original street furniture and are an integral part of the Embankment's design.
