Description
The Statue of George III is located in the quadrangle of Somerset House and was erected in 1780. It was sculpted by John Bacon the elder. The statue features a bronze standing figure of George III alongside a lion, set on a Portland stone pedestal. Below the statue, there is a reclining bronze figure of Father Thames, which is raised on a plinth within a balustraded parapet that surrounds a semicircular well in front of the statue. This design is a formal element of the quadrangle conceived by architect William Chambers.
