Description

The Hampton Water Works Morelands Building, Engine House was constructed between 1867 and 1870, designed by engineer Joseph Quick and later extended and completed in 1885-1886 by engineer J.W., who later became Sir James Restler, for the Southwark and Vauxhall Water Company. The building is made of gault brick and features a central section that is one storey high, flanked by two-storey end blocks. The central range consists of a series of blind arches with broad segmental heads, extending 15 bays in length. The projecting end blocks have an arcaded ground floor and segmental windows above the basement, with a cornice that runs the full length of the building. The windows are adorned with moulded surrounds and cast-iron honey-comb patterned glazing bars. A stand-pipe tower that was part of the original design was demolished in 1970.
