Description
Riverdale, gate and railings, built between 1898 and 1900, consists of two connected wings. The engine house, which faces Upper Sunbury Road, features a symmetrical facade with five bays. The outer bays are slightly advanced and include full-height, triple light, round-headed windows, topped with slated mansard roofs covered in fishscale tiles. Each of these roofs has a dormer set into the parapet brickwork. The second and fourth bays have pairs of full-height round-headed windows, which are topped with stone parapet balustrading. The central bay is also advanced and contains a triple light round-headed window, with an entrance porch below that has a balustraded balcony. The parapet displays the stone barge of the Southwark and Vauxhall Water Company. There is an entrance gate and iron railings. Behind and to the right of the engine house is a long building designed in a "nave and aisle" form, featuring an arcaded ground floor and a slated lean-to roof that rises to a clerestory, which lights the central area that has a pitched roof.
