Description

This is a post located at National Grid Reference TQ 140668, dating from around 1861. It stands approximately 3½ feet high and is made of metal. The post features a four-legged plinth with a stop-chamfered pier above it, which has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. A City of London shield is cast on the front of the capital band, and there is lettering on the pier below. This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary at which duty was payable, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
