Description
This is a post located by the Toll House on Portsmouth Road in Esher, dating from around 1860. It stands approximately 3½ feet high and features a metal, four-legged plinth with a stop-chamfered pier. The pier has a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The capital band displays a City of London shield, with lettering on the front of the pier. This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
