Description
This is a post located approximately 400 yards west of Skew Arch in Esher, dating from around 1860. It stands about 4½ feet high and is made of metal. The post features a four-legged plinth with a stop-chamfered pier above, which is topped with a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. A shield of the City of London is cast on the front, with lettering below on the pier. This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
