Description
This is a post located in the garden of Foxhole in Oxshott, dating from around 1860. It stands approximately 3½ feet high and is made of metal. The post features a four-legged plinth with a chamfered pier above, topped by a moulded capital band and a pyramidal top. The front of the capital band displays a cast shield of the City of London, with lettering on the pier below. This post served as a coal and wine tax marker, indicating the boundary where duty was payable, with the coal tax dating back to the 1660s.
