Description

The coal tax post outside Cricketfield Cottage dates from around 1860 and is made of metal. It stands approximately 4½ feet high and features a four-legged plinth with a stop-chamfered pier above, topped by a moulded capital band with a pyramidal top. The front of the capital band displays a cast shield of the City of London, and there is lettering on the pier that reads: "24 & 25 CAP VICT. 42". This post served as a boundary marker indicating where duty was payable on coal and wine, with the coal tax originating in the 1660s.
