Description

Middle Barton County Primary School is a school and schoolhouse built in 1866, as noted in a blind oculus. The building is constructed from squared and coursed limestone, accented with bands of dressed ironstone, and features a stone-coped gabled roof made of Welsh slate, complete with finials. Designed in the Gothic-Revival style, it is a single-storey structure with an eight-window range and a central gabled bay. The front façade includes offset buttresses at the outer corners and a central gabled bay that has a blind lunette above two-light trefoil-headed windows. The outer bays feature three-light Caernarvon-arched windows, with trefoiled lights in each outer bay.

The left-end gable is distinguished by large offset buttresses that separate two-light Geometrical windows and a bellcote topped with a pyramidal roof. There is a gabled porch with a plank door set in a chamfered pointed arched doorway, located at the rear left wing, which is built with similar materials. A 20th-century one-storey extension is attached to the left side. The right-end gable also has two-light Geometrical windows and a plank door set in a pointed chamfered surround. To the right of the school, there is a former schoolmaster's house, which follows a similar style and materials. This house is two-storey with an L-shaped plan, featuring a front wing and an adjoining timber porch with trefoiled lights. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
