Description

STEEPLE BARTON CHURCH LANE SP42NW (North side) Middle Barton 1/272 Nos.27 (Middle Barton County Primary School) and 29 - II School and schoolhouse. Date 1866 inscribed in blind oculus. Squared and coursed limestone with bands of dressed ironstone; stone-coped gabled Welsh slate roof with finials. Gothic-Revival style. One storey; 8-window range with gabled bay to centre. Front has offset buttress to outer corners and central gabled bay. Gabled bay has blind lunette above 2-light trefoil-headed windows. Outer bays have 3-light Caernarvon-arched windows, and trefoiled lights to each outer bay. Left-end gable has large offset buttresses dividing 2-light Geometrical windows, and bellcote with pyramidal roof; gabled porch with plank door set in chamfered pointed arched doorway, to rear left wing of similar materials. C20 one-storey extension to left. Right-end gable has 2-light Geometrical windows and plank door set in pointed chamfered surround. Former schoolmaster's house to right, of similar style and materials: 2-storey, L-shaped plan with front wing and adjoining timber porch with trefoiled lights. Interior not inspected.
