Description
The building is a dovecote located 10 meters to the rear of P. Strainge's Butcher's Shop on Bampton Bridge Street. It is likely from the 17th century and has been altered in the 20th century. The structure is made of coursed rubble limestone with semi-dressed quoins and features a stone slate roof with moulded gable copings. It is rectangular in shape with a tall loft.
Each gable end has a high chamfered stone mullion window that contains two arched lights and is topped with a Tudor hoodmould. The east side has a 20th-century garage opening, a boarded door with a fanlight and wooden lintel to the right, and a small boarded door at first floor level within a chamfered stone surround. At the center of the roof is a square wooden glover topped with a stone ball finial.
Inside, the dovecote retains nesting boxes. Both gable ends have later extensions; the south gable features a lean-to garage, while the north gable has a stone slated gabled projection and a 20th-century flat-roofed rendered extension that is used as a butcher's store.
