Description
J. Temple's Hardware Stores is a shop and dwelling built in the late 18th century and altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble limestone and features a stone slate roof. The left chimney has been rebuilt in the 20th century. The building has two storeys and an attic, with two bays.
On the ground floor, there are 20th-century double shop doors to the left, located in a former window opening with a flat stone arch above. To the right, there is a wide 20th-century shop window set in a rendered surround, which was previously sheltered by a porch. The porch has a hipped slate roof supported by wooden posts and once provided cover for a central door and window.
The first floor contains two 20th-century three-light wooden casements, each with original flat stone arches. A gabled roof dormer features a 20th-century three-light metal casement. The left gable end has large 20th-century casements. At the rear, there is a lower two-storey wing with irregularly placed casements and doors. The building was illustrated in Country Life on July 19th, 1946.
