Description
The Wheatley War Memorial is a tall limestone structure designed in the form of a Greek cross with decorative arms and a moulded foot, rising from a tapering octagonal shaft. This shaft stands on a square plinth, which is set on a two-stage octagonal base, elevated by a shallow square step.
An inscription on the front face of the plinth states, "THIS MEMORIAL,/ ONCE AT/ MAGDALEN COLLEGE,/ COMMEMORATES THE INHABITANTS OF WHEATLEY WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN TWO WORLD WARS/ 1974." The sides of the plinth feature the dates "MCMXIV" and "MCMXVIII."
The three front faces of the top stage of the base display black slate tablets. The central plaque lists "1914 – 1918/ (12 NAMES)," while the side plaques each carry 12 names. A small plaque on the front face of the lower stage reads "2014/ THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN." Additionally, a slate plaque on the rear of the base notes "1939 – 1945/ (9 NAMES)." All inscriptions on these plaques are incised and painted white.
