Description
The Lower Brailes War Memorial is a sandstone structure built in 1920, designed by an unknown architect.
The memorial features an octagonal platform, approximately 1.5 meters across, supporting a floriated cross with cusped arms and circular embellishments. This cross is set atop a slender, tapering octagonal shaft, which is placed on a moulded base that rests on a tall, rectangular plinth with neatly-moulded and recessed corners. The plinth is elevated on an octagonal platform consisting of three steps.
Inscriptions are presented in a neat Serif font with black lettering. The south face of the base commemorates those who died in the First World War, stating: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY / OF THOSE WHO LAID DOWN / THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919 / FROM THE PARISH OF / BRAILES AND WINDERTON," followed by the names of 15 fallen soldiers. Below this, it reads: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN / THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN / HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS / S. JOHN XV 13."
Moving anti-clockwise, the next face lists the dates 1939-1945, along with the names of three individuals who lost their lives in the Second World War. This section concludes with the inscription: "THESE MEN ALSO MADE THE SUPREME / SACRIFICE LAYING DOWN THEIR LIVES / THAT WE MAY LIVE."
