Description

The George Hotel, originally a house, is now a hotel and public house located on Brailes High Street. It dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 18th century. The building is constructed of finely jointed coursed squared ironstone and features a steeply pitched tile roof with brick ridge, end, and lateral stacks.

The structure consists of two parts. The left section is two storeys plus an attic and has a four-window range, while the right section is two storeys with a two-window range. The left part has a renewed door to the right, flanked by a canted bay window on the left and a 16-pane sash window on the right. To the far left, there are two 2-light stone-mullioned windows with ovolo sections, hood moulds, and label stops. The first floor features four 16-pane sash windows with wooden lintels and two 18th-century gabled roof dormers with opening casements. The right part has two 16-pane sash windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a stone lateral stack. There is a 19th-century brick extension at the rear right.

Attached to the left end of the hotel is a carriage entrance and barn, built in the 18th century with regular coursed ironstone. The roofs are partly covered with Welsh slate and partly with stone slate. The left end features a wood-mullion window, and there is a brick lateral stack to the right. A two-light wood-mullioned window with a wooden lintel is also present on the right. The off-centre carriage entrance to the left has plank half doors and a wooden frame, with a plank loft door to the left.
