Description

HOLTON A40 SP50NE (North side) 5/129 Milestone approx. 350m. SE of junction with B4027 - II

Milestone. Early C18. Limestone. Tapering stone of oval plan with rounded top. South face inscribed "XLIX/Miles From/ London/ To Oxford/ V", probably partly re-cut over damaged surface. The road was turnpiked in 1719 by The Stokenchurch and Enslow Trust. (K. Lawrence, Milestones of Oxfordshire: Oxfordshire Museums Information Sheet 7).
