Description
Northfield Farmhouse is a mid-18th century farmhouse constructed from coursed limestone rubble with some squared dressings. It features a concrete plain-tile roof and brick gable stacks. The building has a double-depth plan with a rear wing and stands two storeys plus an attic high. The three-window front includes a doorway to the right of centre, which has a rectangular ornamental overlight beneath a flat canopy supported by shaped brackets, and a 12-pane sash window above. The outer bays have renewed tripartite sashes, and all openings are topped with stone flat arches.
To the right, there is a small early 19th-century addition that features a canted bay window on its end wall. The double-span main roof has gable parapets with projecting kneelers, and one of the stacks retains a brick dentil cap. The sides and rear of the farmhouse have casements with heavy wooden lintels, some of which are chamfered. The lower rear wing, which returns on the left, includes a gabled half dormer and a loft door with external brick steps.
Inside, the farmhouse has fielded panelled doors and H-L hinges, as well as an open-string staircase with a ramped handrail and turned newels. This property was formerly part of the Water Eaton Estate.
