Description

St. John's Priory School is a mid-19th century building with earlier origins, likely incorporating medieval remains from the 13th century Hospital of St. John the Baptist. The structure is made of regularly coursed ironstone rubble and features a steeply pitched tile roof with stone coping on the left, a gargoyle, and brick ridge and end stacks on rendered bases. It has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a total of five windows across its rectangular plan, which includes a porch projection and brick extensions at the rear.

The two-storey porch has a pointed arched doorway with chamfered jambs, a hood mould with foliated stops, a pointed plank door, and wooden gates. The porch also features two-light windows with cusped heads and glazing bars. On the ground floor, there are four two-light windows, one of which has Gothic glazing bars. The windows have wood lintels or stone arches. The first floor contains five two-light casements, two of which have rounded heads and stained glass for the chapel, while the others have glazing bars and square heads, all with wood lintels. The roof includes five gabled dormers with Gothick glazing bars.

Inside, there is an open well staircase and Gothick details in cupboard doors, doors, and niches. The roof is noted for having two tiers of 16th-century windbraces. The coursed ironstone walls extend to the left and right of the porch, with the right wall returning to link with the main range. The building was acquired in 1851 for school use by the sisters of the Charity of St. Paul.
