Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist, a Roman Catholic church, was built in 1838 by Hickman and Derick of Oxford in the Gothic-revival style. It features limestone ashlar construction with an ironstone plinth and a lead roof. The church consists of a chancel, nave, and west tower. The embattled chancel has an east window with three lights and a traceried pointed arched head, flanked by two similar two-light windows, and has a hipped roof. The nave is divided into five bays by buttresses and includes five two-light pointed arched windows with traceried heads and hood moulds. The west tower has four stages, with a west doorway featuring a wooden door and moulded, chamfered jambs and spandrels adorned with quatrefoil decoration. Above the door is a niche with a traceried canopy and a figure with an eagle on a pedestal. The third stage has a clock, and the bell stage above has two-light louvred windows with hood moulds. The west end of the nave has flanking niches with traceried heads and figures on pilasters. Inside, the chancel boasts a painted vaulted roof supported by four slender columns, along with a painted aumbry and a vaulted nave roof. The slender columns have foliated capitals, and there is a balcony. A stone relief of the Crucifixion, dating from around 1400, is located below the altar and originates from the old parish church.
