Description

St John's School, now used as Church Rooms, was built around 1839-1842 by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. The building is constructed from coursed squared blocks of limestone and features a steeply pitched slate roof with stone end stacks, copings, and quoins. It has an L-plan layout and consists of two storeys and a basement.

The entrance is located to the right, accessed via stone steps leading into a gabled porch at the first floor. This porch includes a pointed arched doorway with moulded chamfered jambs and a hood mould adorned with foliated stops, leading to a plank door. The ground floor features three-light stone-mullioned windows with square heads, while the first floor has three-light stone-mullioned windows with traceried heads and glazing bars, along with two single-light windows.

On the front facing Dashwood Road, there is a three-window range with a gable fronted bay to the left. The ground floor here includes a long 20th-century window to the left, a single-light window, and a three-light square headed stone-mullioned window. The first floor has three two-light stone-mullioned windows, two of which have traceried heads. The building is topped with ornamental ridge tiles. The interior has not been inspected. It is included for its group value.
