Description
The Church of Saint James is a church built in 1838, with a chancel added in 1861. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate roof. The church has a nave with galleries on three sides, a central west tower, and a short chancel flanked by vestries to the north and south. The nave consists of seven bays, with a stone plinth, an eaves parapet, a door in the western bay, weathered buttresses, and Y-traceried pointed openings in the other bays. The tower is supported by diagonal buttresses and has three clock faces, a stone band, two lancet openings at the bell stage, battlements, and plain pinnacles. The one-bay chancel and vestry have traceried windows with dripmoulds, and the east window features five lights with stained glass by Hardman. Inside, the gallery has a panelled parapet, is supported by cast iron columns, and houses the organ on the right side. The roof has massive cranked and cusped trusses adorned with heraldic and stiffleaf bosses.
