Description
St John's Schoolrooms were built in 1816/7 and are constructed from ham stone ashlar in a quasi-collegiate style. The building features a Welsh slated roof with coped gables, each topped by a short stone chimney stack. The two-storey, five-bay facade facing Church Street includes a large arched recessed porch in Tudor style, with steps leading up and a plinth surrounding the building. It has tall four-light mullioned and transomed windows with flat heads and linked label moulds on both levels, along with a string course at the first-floor cill level and stone eaves moulding.
On the side facing Church Path, the main gable is prominent, featuring a corbelled projecting chimney stack. This gable is flanked by matching three-light mullioned and transomed windows on both levels, with the centre light of the first-floor windows raised. The windows are also found in a one-bay extension and a smaller gable, which has pointed arched entrance doorways beneath a pair of first-floor windows. Above and between these doorways is a sculptured oblong panel. The interior has not been seen. The schoolrooms were built to replace earlier Sunday Schools from 1618 that were located in Vicarage Street and incorporate the Chantry.
