Description
Nos 23 and 25 Princes Street is a late 17th-century building that was originally a house but is now used as a shop and office. It is constructed of stone, featuring Bath stone on the ground floor and Ham stone above, topped with a stone slate roof between coped gables. The building has two storeys and three bays. On the left side of the ground floor, there is a 20th-century doorway with a modern architrave that returns into the plinth. To the right, a 20th-century shopfront is set back into a flat arched opening. Above, there are three 12-square-paned windows, each framed with architraves, and a bold Ham stone eaves cornice. On the south gable, at a high level, there are remains of a blocked 2-light mullioned window with a label moulding. The interior and rear of the building have not been seen. This property is connected to Nos 27 and 29, sharing the same roof and eaves cornice. Variations in detail suggest that one or both of these properties have been re-fronted, with one re-fronting carried out in 1714 by John Old.
