Description
St John's Parochial School, now used as offices, was built in 1850. It features a Tudor Gothic Revival style and is constructed from Brandon Hill Grit squared rubble with Pennant bands and limestone dressings. The building has a cross axial stack and a decorative tiled cross-gabled roof. It is a single-storey structure with an attic and has a nine-window range. The design is nearly symmetrical, with a large cross gable in the center and smaller gables at each end and on the returns.
The exterior includes a moulded plinth, Pennant bands below the cills, heads, and relieving arches, as well as moulded eaves with carved rainwater heads. The gables are coped with kneelers and finials. The main entrance is on the left side of the main gable, featuring an elliptical arch, chamfered jambs, and a label above a battened door. Lean-to porches with Tudor-arched doorways are located at each end, with the right end porch open and side windows with margin lights.
The main gable also has a large Tudor-arched window with 15 lights and lattice cast-iron panes, above which is a plaque inscribed "ST JOHN'S PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS/ MDCCCL" and a small bellcote. Other windows throughout the building have mullions and metal casements, with the side and end gables featuring 3-light ground-floor and 2-light first-floor windows, as well as 3- and 2-light mullion windows with labels. The roof displays a decorative diaper pattern of black tiles interspersed with red and brown tiles.
The rear elevation has similar features but includes later additions. Inside, there are few surviving original details. The property also has attached front area walls with wrought-iron railings and tall perimeter walls surrounding the playground at the rear. Overall, it presents a vigorous design that contributes positively to the townscape.
