Description

This public urinal, dating from the 1880s, was manufactured by W. MacFarlane & Co. Ltd’s Saracen Foundry in Glasgow and relocated to its current site in 1903/4.

The structure is rectangular and made of cast iron, featuring square entrance screens at both the north and south entrances. It has a slender iron frame adorned with decorative panels that exhibit a geometric, Moorish-style design. The upper panels include ventilation slits, and the upper iron frame is detailed with a saw-tooth pattern. The hipped roof is a glazed cast-iron construction arranged in two tiers. Positioned on a slight slope, the north end is set into the concrete pavement, while the sides and south end rest on chamfered stone blocks. Each entrance has a concrete step, which is shallower at the north end. Inside, there are two rows of bowed porcelain urinal units, separated by curved metal ‘modesty’ screens at chest level. The floor surrounding the urinals is covered with modern tiles.
