Description
Beacon Windmill is a windmill built between 1790 and 1810, located on the northeast side of Rolvenden Road in Benenden. It is a smock mill, part of a pair, although the other mill has long since disappeared. The structure features a tapering octagonal base made of tarred brick. The upper part, which was originally weatherboarded, has been replaced with large planks. At the time of the survey, the platform at the first floor level, the boat-shaped cap, fantail, and sweeps were all missing. Inside, the windmill contains an intact spur wheel, upright shaft, and remains of the wallower. The brake wheel and windshaft were not in their original positions but were available for reinsertion.
