Description
Wymondham Windmill is a windmill built around 1813, raised in the mid-19th century and restored in the late 20th century. It is constructed from coursed and squared ironstone and brick, with some areas rendered, and features a sheet-metal covered 20th-century ogee domed cap with a finial. The windmill has a battered round tower with five stages.
On the southwest side, there is a double door with a wooden lintel, a casement window above it, and a square hatch above that. The fourth stage is blank, followed by another casement. The southeast side features a casement and another casement above it, along with a projecting pulley for an auxiliary drive. The third stage on this side is blank, with a casement above.
On the northeast side, there is a stable door with a double door above it, followed by a casement and a blank fourth stage, with another casement above. The northwest side has casements on the first and second stages, a blank third stage, and another casement above. All casements have glazing bars and slight segmental heads.
The cap includes a fantail stage and a cross for six sails. Inside, there are three pairs of stones, garners, feed hoppers, and tentering gear, all from the 19th century, which are complete and in use. The upper stages contain an octagonal oak main shaft, a sack hoist, hand gear, and a wind shaft. The mill is currently being restored to full working order.
