Description

The Brick Kiln is a late 16th century timber-framed house that has been altered in the 17th century and refronted and extended in the 19th century. The ground floor features red brick with grey headers arranged in a diaper pattern, while the first floor is tile hung, incorporating bands of diamond point tiles. The building has a steeply pitched tiled roof that is hipped at the left end and half-hipped at the right end, topped with a cruciform brick stack. It stands two storeys tall and has four windows, with modern casement windows featuring cambered heads on the ground floor. To the right, there is a two-storey, one-bay 19th-century addition made of diaper brickwork and covered with a tiled roof, which includes one modern casement window and a modern gabled weather porch. An end chimneystack displays an Invicta fire insurance plaque. Inside the main part of the house, there is a wide inglenook fireplace with two salt cupboards, a ceiling supported by roll-moulded spine and axial beams, and chamfered joists with lamb's tongue stops and jowled posts. Traces of pargetting in a combed pattern, likely from the 18th century, can also be seen. A winder stair in the attic, probably dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, was inserted when the roof was altered.
