Description
The war memorial in Benenden, dating from around 1920, features a bronze seated statue of a woman in flowing robes. She leans on a shield and holds a laurel wreath in her left hand. The statue is mounted on a rectangular stepped stone plinth that measures approximately 7 feet 6 inches long. An inscription on a bronze plaque at the top of the plinth reads, "To the memory of the men of Benenden who fought and died for justice and liberty in the Great War 1914-18. Their name liveth for evermore." Below this plaque, another bronze plaque lists the names of local men who died in the First World War, followed by those who died in the Second World War. The memorial was sculpted by Albert Toft and cast at Albion Art Foundry in Parsons Green.
