Description
Gibbon's School is a headmaster's house and primary school canteen, dated 1609 on a wooden board under the eaves with the inscription "Edmund Gibbon founder of this school." The building was refaced in the early 19th century. It is timber-framed, with a red brick ground floor and scalloped tiles on the first floor. The roof is an old plain tiled design with a central cruciform brick stack.
The structure has two storeys and four bays. On the first floor, there are four 19th-century casements: two are three-light, one is two-light, and one is four-light. The ground floor features a four-light 19th-century casement on the right side, a doorcase with a flat wooden hood on brackets, and a six-flush panel door where the top two panels are glazed. There are also two four-light casements and two additional six-panelled doors. A hipped weather hood links these elements with a two-light casement in between.
The left side elevation has a weatherboarded gable and an early 19th-century brick lean-to, while the right side elevation is entirely weatherboarded and features a moulded bressumer to the gable, likely from the early 19th century. Both gables have carved wooden brackets. Inside, the building includes jowled posts and beams with lamb's tongue stops, and six-panelled early 19th-century doors.
