Description

Clevelands is a house located in Benenden, dating from the early 17th century, with a later 17th-century staircase tower. The building was refronted in the early 19th century and has an addition from the mid to late 19th century. It is timber-framed and refaced in red brick with grey headers, and the right side gable is partially tile hung. The roof is tiled, and the structure is L-shaped, consisting of two storeys and four windows. It features a modillion eaves cornice and three early 20th-century triple casements. On the left side, there is a three-light canted bay that extends through all floors, with 20 panes in each bay, and a part plat band. The entrance has a trellised wooden porch with an early 19th-century reeded door surround and paterae behind. There are end chimneystacks, and the right side elevation includes a gabled staircase tower that is partially weatherboarded, featuring early 19th-century "Gothick" windows on the first floor and a late 20th-century extension in a matching style. The left side has two storeys, with red brick on the ground floor and tile hanging on the first floor. Inside, there is a former hall or parlour with spine beams that have lamb's tongue stops. The 17th-century open well staircase has square corner posts with sun designs, square finials with octagonal moulding, and squat balusters. The roof includes collar beams and lacks ridgepieces, and the attic retains original floorboards.
