Description

Baldwins General Stores and Kingsford Cottage is a house and shop that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, likely originally an open hall-house, which was refronted in the 18th century. The ground floor is clad in red brick with a pattern of grey headers in diaperwork, while the first floor is tile hung. The building has a tiled roof that is half-hipped at one end and stands two storeys tall with three windows. There are two 20th-century flat-roofed dormers and three 19th-century casements with L hinges on the first floor. The ground floor features two late 19th-century casements, flanked by half-glazed doors and a canted bay shop front, along with a six flush panelled door. At the rear, there is an early 19th-century cast slide. A large 17th-century external chimneystack is located at the back of the building. Inside the shop, there is a massive upright post, and the right side ground floor room contains wide open fireplaces with an opening to a bread oven, as well as a spice cupboard with a wooden surround and shelf. The first-floor bedroom retains the remains of one or two shutter grooves. Some jowled posts have gunstock profiles, while others are sharply cut. An octagonal crown post, likely from the 15th century, is also present.
