Description
This is a house with a shop, likely dating back to the 17th century or earlier. It is built with local stone, rendered with a pebbledash finish, and has an ashlar plinth. The roof is slate with a plain gable to the west. There are brick and stone chimney stacks. The house is two storeys high with two bays, the second of which projects slightly. Bay one has a 16-pane sash window on the ground floor and a 12-pane sash window above. Bay two features a shopfront from the Regency period, with slim reeded timber pilasters, a thin fascia, a moulded hood, and a later 24-pane shop window. A 6-panel door with a plain fanlight is set in a slight recess, and above it are a pair of 12-pane sash windows. At the rear are two projecting gables; the eastern gable has a stone slate roof, while the other is half-hipped with plain clay tiles over a base course of stone slate.
The interior contains a mix of 17th and 18th century features, some of which may have been moved from elsewhere. Likely original elements include a first-floor fireplace with a stone lintel 900mm deep, featuring a flat, hollow chamfer and roll-mould arch; several 18th century doors and partitions; and sections of a 17th century roof frame on the eastern side. The roof in the street-facing bay has been altered, revealing a collar and tie beam roof truss with a carpenter's mark and the inscription “W1696” carved on one member. One crossbeam has two different patterns of painted decoration on its underside. Recent alterations revealed the pencilled date 1820 repeated several times in the western section of the building.
