Description

Bruton House, Burgess Store and Goudhurst Antiques and Interiors is a house and shop that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 18th century and late 19th century. The building features a timber frame and is weather boarded above a painted brick ground floor, topped with a plain tiled roof. It has two storeys and an attic, including a mezzanine floor at the left end. The roof has a half-hipped section that steps down to the right end, which has a gambrel roof with gablets. There are stacks located at the centre left and at the rear.

The building displays various window styles, including a two-light leaded wooden casement on the ground floor to the left, a three-light leaded wooden casement below it, and three glazing bar sash windows on the first floor. There is also a multi-pane bow window to the left, featuring a cornice and a central glazing bar sash. The late 19th-century shop front on the right includes canted plate glass bays and a recessed glazed door, which is sheltered by a large canopy with valancing and supported by cast iron posts. To the left end, there is a half-glazed door, and a boarded door in the centre, both of which have flat hoods on brackets.

The right return of the building features a long canted two-storey wing, with glazing bar sashes on the main block and two dormer windows. The rear wing has wooden casements and boarded doors. The main structure is noted to have been a cloth hall, described as "a barn of a building" with massive crown posts, according to S T Wilson in "Goudhurst Pictorial History." The shop front was associated with William Chester Burgess, who operated from around 1840 to 1902.
