Description

Fountain House is an early 19th-century building with shops, built on the site of an earlier structure. The exterior is primarily from the early 19th century, while the underlying structure is of an earlier date. It is timber-framed and has a roughcast finish with applied close-studded framework, with a painted ground floor. The roof is tiled. The building originally comprised three storeys, with a basement, and includes stacks positioned centrally to the left and projecting at the right end. The top floor has two three-light and one central two-light leaded casement windows. The first floor has two three-light and one two-light windows. A canted plate glass bay window is located to the left, and a panelled door with a flight of seven steps is at the end. The basement and ground floor have a central three-light casement window and a canted multi-pane bay window dating from the early 19th century, with half-glazed doors to the centre left and centre right, the latter having a gabled hood. Local tradition suggests the building may have originated as a cloth hall.
