Description
Chestnut House, formerly known as Benenden Post Office, is a house dating from around 1840. The front elevation is weatherboarded and features a hipped slate roof with an end cemented chimneystack. The side elevation is constructed of red brick with grey headers arranged in a diaperwork pattern, while the first floor is tile hung. The rear is partially weatherboarded. The building stands two storeys tall and has three windows, along with two flat-roofed dormers. On the first floor, there are three 16-pane sash windows set in moulded architraves, with blind boxes on the end windows. The ground floor includes a nearly flat wooden verandah supported by four cast iron columns. There are three 16-pane sash windows in reeded architraves, and the central doorcase features a rectangular fanlight above a six-panelled door, with the top four panels being glazed.
