Description

The Grammar School and headmaster's house, built between 1909 and 1911 by F.H. Greenaway of London, features rendered brickwork above a brick plinth, sandstone dressings, and green slate roofs. This long, roughly symmetrical building is designed in a Free Style with 17th century influences, showcasing a picturesque arrangement of gables, bays, and tall chimney stacks. It has two storeys, with the headmaster's house on the left, which includes a central gable and a two-storey canted bay window to the left of the entrance. The central block is recessed, flanked by gables at either end, and has a central porch that slightly projects forward, topped with a square clock cupola resembling a louvre. To the right, the hall roof rises to full height and extends forward at right angles, featuring a wide gable over a tall canted bay window with a battlemented top. Adjacent to this is a single-storey office block with a central gable. All windows are fitted with mullions and transoms, and while the detailing is simple, the openings are chamfered, and the hall gable is coped. Inside, the hall consists of six bays and has a ceiling above the collar of the archbraced roof, with simple panelling, a canted bay to the south, and a five-light window to the north. The school was originally founded in the town in 1549 and relocated to its current site in 1911, with the choice of a London architect reflecting the school's ties to the Drapers' Company.
